Briefly describe the organization you work for.
A Logistics/Supply Chain Consultancy offering consultancy to Blue Chip clients. It was established in 1920.
How did you get your current job & what were the steps you took from graduation?
On leaving University in 1968 I was employed by Shell International and was trained by them as an operational research analyst. This afforded me the opportunity of travel and I had several trips to Japan.
After 4 years with Shell I joined British Road Services as Consultancy Manager offering consultancy both internally and externally. I was then promoted to Head of Distribution for BRS and then joined a sister company the NFC Parcels Group (Roadline and National Carriers) as Marketing Director with responsibility for both Strategy and IT. I spent 13 years with the NFC (renamed Exel) and was part of the buyout of the group from the government. The organisation is now part of DHL.
In 1985 I was head hunted by the RAC and became Group Systems Director of motoring services and a member of the Strategy panel.
After 2 years I was invited to join the board of Davies & Robson and become a part owner.
How relevant was your subject of study in securing your current job?
Operational Research and IT have been highly relevant to my whole career and I use Operational Research in projects for clients. A degree in Mathematics gave me the opportunity to be further trained by Shell in OR.
Any advice you may have for other individuals considering your career path.
A career starting in OR provides an opportunity to get a good understanding of most areas of business, to interact early in ones career with senior executives and opportunities to move into senior positions.
